Highly Efficient Energy Storage Systems
The greater the share of renewable energies (particularly solar and wind power plants) in electricity generation, the greater the variations in this generation. As a result of the weather there is either too much or too little electricity available. One of the major challenges is to offset these variations from the use of energy storage systems.
Viewed against this backdrop, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe is principally backing two solutions. "Liquid Air Energy Storage" involves using excess power to compress/liquefy air and store it. In contrast, "Power-to-Fuel" involves using excess power and CO2 arising in power/industrial plants so as to manufacture and use synthetic natural gas or other synthetic fuels.
MHPSE has developed the corresponding solutions. It has teamed up with partners to bring these types of technology onto the market in the near future. As such, the company is extending its portfolio in thermal power plant engineering.
